What are Coffee Blends and Why Does it Matter?

At Blaze our coffees are blended to create the finest flavours for the most discerning coffee drinkers, but what does that mean to the non-aficionado? Blended coffee isn't coffee that's been put in a blender, but a mix of beans from different origins.

The opposite of a blend, “single origin coffee”, is made up of processed beans from only one place. This isn't something general like one country, but something very specific like one area of one farm. Many things affect the flavour of coffee beans, everything from region, climate and altitude from where it is grown, all the way down to how the beans are roasted at the roaster.

These distinct flavours bring different elements to the table, like fruity notes of berry, citrus, or stone fruit, spicy notes like nutmeg, or pepper, floral notes like tea, or roses, roasted notes like smoke or malt. Sometimes these flavour notes are undesirable like a medicinal, or rubber notes that can be off putting.

The goal of a blend is to mix these unique single flavour profiles together to create a whole that is greater than the sum of it's parts. This can be combining similar notes to create a new better experience or by taking an undesirable note and masking it.

Like a baker crafting the finest cake, Blaze's coffee blend recipes are carefully tailored to create very specific flavour profiles, to give our customers a great coffee drinking experience.

Our blends are made up of arabica beans, find all out them and how they're grown here.

Roasting also plays an important role is our flavour profiles, read all about it here.
