50 Shades of Roasting - How do you like your Coffee Beans?

How you like coffee beans roasted? As light as a summers day, dark as midnight, or do you like them somewhere in-between.

While there may not be 50 specific roasts for your beans, there are actually more than most people think. There are 4 main types of roasted beans - Light, Medium, Medium Dark and Dark. And within those about 3-4 more depending on how you want to define them.

Here is a Coffee Roast Breakdown

Light Roast:

If you are looking for more mild-bodied coffees this roast is for you. The beans are light brown in colour and should not have any oil on the surface. This roast is perfect for those who prefer light, fragrant, floral or fruity coffee notes.

Sub Roast Types: Light City, Half City, Cinnamon, New England

Medium Roast:

Welcome to the roast most preferred in America. This medium roast coffee appears brown in colour with a non-oily surface. If your preference is a flavourful, traditional cup of coffee, then look no further than a medium roast.

Sub Roast Types: City, American, Breakfast

Medium-Dark Roast:

Are you looking for a modest yet bittersweet aftertaste? Then maybe you should pick up a medium-dark roast coffee. You will notice the coffee beans have a rich, dark brown colour and have a slightly oily appearance on their surface. Slightly bittersweet notes and deep flavours for your every sip.

Sub Roast Types: Full City

Dark Roast:

Welcome to the dark side. These beans are nearly black, oily and produce a desirable bitterness. As the bean gets darker you will notice as well, less acidity present in your coffee. If you enjoy a heavy mouthfeel and punch you in the face flavour, come to the dark side of coffee.

Sub Roast Types: High Continental, New Orleans, European, Espresso, Viennese, Italian and French

I definitely prefer a darker roast. I know there are coffee snobs out there preaching about how it is an abomination and the only true way to brew a coffee is with a lighter roast, but I think it truly does come down to preference.
