We wake up every morning, prep the coffee maker and then wait patiently for that delicious black gold to slowly filter and drip its way into our pot. I refer to this time from when you wake up till you pour your first cup of coffee as perk-a-tory, that nothingness of space where time stands still and you hover like a zombie waiting impatiently for that last drip to fall into the carafe so you can devour it.
But have you ever wondered where your drug of choice came from? Well don’t you worry I am here to shed a light on where the most popular drink in the world came from and how it arrived to where it is today.
Let’s start at the very beginning, where and when was coffee discovered, well that is where it gets a bit murky. The truth is, no one knows exactly when or how coffee was discovered and there are many a legend about its origins.
Coffee is grown all around the globe and the most agreed upon legend states that its heritage goes back centuries to the ancient forests on the Ethiopian plateau. It is there that the legend begins with a goat herder by the name of Kaldi who first discovered the vast potential of these magical beans.
As the story goes, Kaldi discovered coffee after he noticed that his goats after eating the berries from a specific tree became so energetic that they would not sleep during the night.
Kaldi excited by what had transpired alerted his local monastery with what he had witnessed. The local monastery made a drink from the berries and found themselves quite alert through the agonizingly long hours of evening prayer. The abbot shared his revelation about the berries with the other monks at the monastery, and soon the knowledge of these energizing berries spread like wildfire.
Soon word spread east and reached the Arabian peninsula, beginning a journey which would see the beans spread across the globe!
That’s it, from humble very beginnings to coffee’s rise as the most sought after drink in the world.
